Habit: herbaceous perennial that produces bulbs, somewhat low growing reaching up to 2 ft (60 cm) tall. The stem is erect and unbranched with 1-3 narrow and long leaves at each node. One to 5 flowers nod in a bell shape near the top of the stem. Opening wide they reveal greenish brown with yellow, or yellowish red markings on pointed petals and large yellow stamen. Flowers bloom May to July, the fruits are angled winged capsules.
Ecology: found in Oregon west of the Cascades and many other Western States, on rocky slopes, grassy sites, and open forests at mid to high elevations, 3280-10,000 ft (1000-3200 m).
Growing Conditions: full sun to partial shade, prefers coarse well-drained soil.
